Welcome to Great Berkhamsted. This part of the site will encourage you to explore the town.
As part of another project, I’ve done a lot of work preparing for the casual visitor and residents who really don’t know much about the town. Yes, there are books on the history and you can find lots of information about our Castle (don’t look now, but a castle in the sense of something to be defended, it ain’t), the Berkhamsted School has history, Graham Greene was based here, William Cowper was born here, we have a ‘shop’ in the High Street containing timbers older than in any other retail outlet in the country and, naturally, it’s a nice place to live. I’m more interested in what has changed in living memory and as my memory isn’t what it was, feel free to comment or correct by visiting the forum . I have indicated locations for nearest transport facilities Public Toilets are available in the Water Lane Car Park (behind Tesco in High street - but limited hours of opening!) Refreshments are available all over the main town area, otherwise you are on your own
To get you in the mood, go to this page. Meanwhile, back on the walking front: The first one is a circular ‘walk’ around the south-eastern end of the town. There are three starting places and two routes as I don’t like to make things simple. The reason for two routes is that there are three lots of steps and I’ve made slight detours to avoid them (these are the ‘A’ routes). The audio scripts have not been popular, so have been withdrawn. The guided walk is now available in handy A5 illustrated booklet form to make it easier to use. It includes the main walk, and the ‘alternate’ routes included in the back. It has been updated as the town is still evolving (wot you expect after a couple of thousand years). You can look and read only, but best if you have a ‘transportable’ hard copy. Walk 1 -pdf file (3.26MB) Walk 1 cover -pdf file (2.34MB) If you want a hard copy of the booklet, a copy will cost £5 to include delivery (UK only), 35+ pages and e-mail for more information and/or to order
Remember this is an ongoing project, so things may change and be updated. Just remembered, I’ve already done a similar walk for you, only it takes place in the 1950’s. So if you want a trip down memory lane then have a look here - pdf file (77kb) It’s been updated since by the way to include more of the town More are in the pipeline of similar A5 booklet format and about 35 pages each. I have another 3 walks/trails round 1950s Berkhamsted on the go. I also have a town walk in the pipeline as well as collecting all the usual rubbish that I’ve had published in the Parish magazine, the internet and newsletters. These should provide an insight into how the town has ended up the way it has over the past 20 odd years. You’ll be pleased to know I’m not including my Trade Magazine column and similar items as they are not generally town oriented.
