Welcome to Great Berkhamsted.
This part of the site will provide general visitor information and a pictorial tour around the town.
I saw the sun the other day and it reminded me that I really ought to update some of the pictures in case you are foolish enough too want to come and visit us!
On the left is Lower Kings Road which leads to the station. You will notice a number of To let/For Sale boards. When the Post Office was here, oit was a hive of activity, but then they moved it out of the town centre (BUT we still have one!!).
In the centre, is the tree that has stood outside the REX cinema for as long as I can remember. The Borough Council has decided that it has grown (quick, aren’t they?) and need to be replaced.
On the right is a lovely parade of shops which used to contain a bakers, a cycle shop and other useful places. The bakery is now a computer shop and the rest are a florist, wedding gowns, engravers and an office. Progress!
I was strolling down the High Street and I remembered that Dickmans’ the chemist had changed hands and recalled I took some interior photos in 2001. The new owners said they would retain the interior - I wonder if they did?
Finally for this page, on the left is the view that reminded me about Dickmans’ (he died earlier this year), then we have ‘Hair by Steven’ - a ladies hairdresser in what was the main road (Castle Street) only some fool built a canal across the bottom and, naturally, the railways had to compete!.
Naturally, in such an affluent area, the Costa coffee people had to move in and take over land that doesn’t belong to them (called the pavement, also used by motorists for leaving their motor vehicles while they go to the gym - don’t laugh!!) and finally, the kids have ‘decorated’ the local football team changing rooms.
