Well, as a start, lets see what the town has to offer to the casual visitor. As I am just starting to develop this section of the site, bear with me as it changes format etc. The town is situated in the Chiltern Hills in the forgotten corner of Hertfordshire which juts out into Buckinghamshire.
The ‘official’ Information centre is located in the library in Kings Road, just 100 yards from the main traffic lights. Opening hours are somewhat variable and remember the town closes on Sundays.
We have a nice large(ish) Waitrose supermarket, smaller Tesco and lots of individual shops. Mind you, if you wish to buy things like beds, furniture or large kitchen appliances you would be out of luck. We do have a fine selection of restaurants and other eating and drinking establishments. You will find shops willing to sell you old books, new books, old paintings, new paintings or all sorts of other bits and we do have public toilets in one of our car parks, but few free parking spaces. We also have a cinema (book in advance ‘cause it’s very popular) well worth a visit together with ‘theme’ cafe/restaurant. Naturally, the cinemas has minimal parking (don’t ask!)
Early closing is supposed to be Wednesday, but some close on Monday.
A general market is held in the town centre on Saturdays and finishes around 4pm. A smaller bric-a-brac market is held on Friday morning either outside or in the Town Hall and a ‘French’ market on the 3rd Sunday in the month
We now have a ‘shopmobility’ scheme with 4 scooters available Monday to Friday.
We also have a new money raising scheme called parking meters along the High Street. You pay for 12 minutes at a time at 10p up to a maximum of 1 hour.
If you wish to actually walk around the town and spend some money, you could try one of the town centre car parks up to a maximum period of 4 hours - all pay and display and less than £1.
Parking charges apply EVERY DAY from 8am to 6pm except Sundays (that means you pay Christmas Day and Bank Holidays
The only exception is ‘canal fields’ which is hidden, not sign-posted but FREE! It is located some 400 yards from the central cross road towards the station, over canal bridge and turn left towards tennis courts and just follow road as it meanders round our invisible open air swimming pool.
The ‘Heritage Walk’ and ‘Graham Greene trail have been launched and I have asked the Council for permission to provide more information rather than you having to actually come to the town and find out it is much better/worse than you thought!
Two new visitor leaflets are now available - one on the town in general and the other on the Castle (don’t laugh or you may be disappointed!)
The Borough Council have just issued two leaflets describing ‘easy access’ routes in the Borough. Neither are for the town, but might prove useful for both visitors and residents alike. One is for Hemel Town Centre (OK, what did you expect?), the other for the Tring Reservoirs, which is much more useful as a reminder of how lucky we all are. Both these leaflets are available from the Access Officer, John Gavin on 228495 (or you can get me to do it if you wish)
Transport links
The railway station is just 5 minutes walk from the High Street and Castle. Trains run about every 20 minutes to/from London Euston, but by Intercity trains you will need to change either at Watford Junction or Milton Keynes.
The Grand Union Canal is also 5 minutes from the Town Centre. Just 48 hours from London or 4 days from Birmingham.
The M25 (Junction 20) is just 7 minutes from the town - however the High Street is some 20 minutes away and parking, well, allow a similar time to find a free spot in one of the 4 main town centre car parks.
The Borough Council (again) run car parks that do not expect you to stay long or even gang up and come by coach, as facilities are almost non-existent.
The ‘500’ bus that runs between Watford and Aylesbury every 30 minutes passes through the town from just after 7am to early evening, after which you are pretty much on your own. If you want to come from further afield by bus, then forget the idea.
So, if you want to visit our town, plan ahead, don’t bring a car and enjoy!
