Business Section Home Page
Welcome to the Berkhamsted web site business section.
No site which intends to reflect the whole community can ignore our wide variation of businesses. It was not that long ago, when Berkhamsted was home to organisations such as CMR, (which turned into Wellcome which turned into Agrevo which turned into houses), Outspan and the West Herts Co-operative Society. We even had a Sainsburys, Woolworth's, Halfords, Currys and even our very own Electricity and Gas showrooms.
The area was famous for Lanes apples, watercress, timber, sheep dip and fly spray. Indeed, the arrival of the toll-pike road, then the Canal, swiftly followed by the railway, led the area from agricultural, to manufacturing, to service industries.
Mind you, over the past couple of hundred years, the thing that has attracted many to the area, has been Berkhamsted School. Many people moved into the area just for the school, most intending to move away once their children's education had been completed. The problem is that with London just 40 minutes away, why move when you can commute? The area now houses many small and large IT organisations such as ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation), so why commute or even live anywhere else when you can earn a living locally?
Enough of my comments, so why not take a stroll around some of our large and small organisations before returning to the site home page to explore more of the towns activities.
Business in a town the size of Berkhamsted is ‘fluid’. By that I mean, we have a lot of small businesses, some of which flourish and expand (usually out of the area), a number just ‘disappear’, but a large number tend to stick around.
I suppose, the idea is to collect all the ‘web-aware’ organisations together in one place. When I first started this in 1997, very few businesses had sites, now almost everyone does - if only you could find them!
Yep, I think that sums it up well!
I have concentrated on businesses which have web-sites and hopefully, any I miss will get in touch.
Do you think this site is worth continuing with?
If so, why not show support by sponsoring some or all of it as I really cannot continue without input or funding from elsewhere.
Give me a ring on 871851 or use the contact link, or it will just rot on the vine!
