Birstall - a village just north of Leicester!

Home Local Information Shops1 Shops 2 Norman Shops 3

This is about Birstall in Leicestershire (not Yorkshire!!)

I have now been a resident of Wanlip for nearly two years (Wanlip information is here) and Birstall is the nearest civilisation within easy walking distance - say about 20 minutes - although the pubs are well beyond staggering distance!

It has a population in excess of 10,000 but keeps calling itself a village. For example Birstall Parish Council - not Town Council. It expanded between the wars with housing stock of the middle class (northern end ) and upper middle class (nearest station and Leicester and either side of the A6). Since the war, to the west of the A6 was developed and since the A46 (northern by-pass) was built, more infilling, so a good variety of housing stock is available for anyone looking to move to the expanding east midlands and easy travel to HS2 hub or the M1.

It has easy access to:

Even a Parish Council that acts like a local club. I’ve had two goes at trying to fill vacancies on the council without being able to break into the club house. Indeed it gets more more bizarre the more you look into what goes on.

So here we are in 2019, the Parish Council still has three vacancies in their ‘club’, but it seems no-one is interested in joining at the moment. After being rejected for co-option, an election was finally called and I was the candidate!

Of course, this may change in May 2019 when local elections take place.

I have it on good authority that anyone who takes in interest in the workings of the ‘club’ is considered ‘political’ but the club already has members of the local Conservative association as members but they don’t count apparently. So, if you think you might like to join the club, you can find an application form on their web-site, but do not indicate you have any interest in anything the council may or may not do otherwise you will have to wait until May 2019 to join. I say that in expectation that as the last contested election was in 2011 (only one ward out of 3), you simply put your name forward and ‘bobs yer uncle’.

It’s very strange up here as where I came from, there was always an election for vacancies with the Conservatives fighting tooth and nail with the Lib-Dems once we got residents trained to take an interest in local affairs to the extent that they could change things for the better. Mind you it took an Independent majority on the council to make it happen. Maybe that’s what the ‘club’ up here is worried about!

Hang on, the ‘club’ keeps saying it’s not political, so what’s the problem?? If you are interested in making waves in 2019, then by all means get in touch, dear reader.

STOP PRESS (who thought that phrase up??)

Because no-one has the slightest interest, I’m now the Parish Councillor for Birstall Riverside ward.

So now you know. I’m hoping to include more information about Birstall, including photos, business details and my views (as expected) as I find time over the coming weeks!
